Earthwing Super Model 40 9 Ply Black Double Drop
This deck is rad. We have tested several prototypes, and finally we landed what we think is the best DH freestyle deck available.
- There is a deep elliptical concave that is deeper near the trucks. It's on one plane, no rocker, no chamber. It comes in 2 flexes - stiff 8 ply, and stiffer 9 ply, with hand picked Great Lakes region hard rock maple. No, maple is not all the same, and we have the best of the best.
- We paid close attention to the details. There is maximum possible real estate near the trucks without wheelbite, and features a deep wheel well that fits snug with large wheels.
- There are routered channels for a touch of torsional flex without sacrificing the stiffer feel of the deck. This will allow the load to be evenly distributed between all 4 wheels in slides for a more predictable ride.
- You can also grab rail, even with bulky slide gloves - just look at how big they are! Fun, fun, fun, and that's our whole purpose here at Earthwing.

Today I feel like I have the time to post a full review on the Earthwing Supermodel 9ply 40"
***This is a review for your average skater. I do not race, I do not bomb hills at 45+ often, I don't have hookups, sponsors, or personal camera men for interviews and skate videos. I shred local neighborhoods, I push to school, the market, the barber, Carls Jr., I'm just here to roll, and shed some light on the (new) products that the market is throwing out at the public.
I want to say that I am 6ft tall, 160lbs, size 12 shoe, and I have been riding this deck for about 5 months, or since it has been released. I first saw the Supermodel on the Earthwing site and instantly fell in love. It was like seeing a new (and very attractive) girl at school, and I bought it using the money I had saved up for a date that would never come
I ordered mine with Brian's first run, and when it arrived at my door I couldn't have been more excited for a new board than ever before. After I had unwrapped it I was just blown away by its beauty, the only way to describe it as is beautiful. The maple looked delicious, and the shape and concave just felt like it was built just for my feet.
For the longest time I had been riding nothing but Rayne, so the first thing I had noticed was how much differently a maple deck felt compared to bamboo. The Supermodel just felt like a toy, brittle and stiff, and even Rayne's stiffest DH decks had somewhat of a flex and bounce to them. The channels underneath the deck were nothing like I've seen before, and I was puzzled as to where I would put stickers. But I really didn't care because the in-your-face Earthwing logo was just enough for it.
I set it up with Randal 180s on 50* baseplates with Venom double barrels and had it all on purple InHeats. This was my set up for THE LONGEST TIME. I never really felt like changing it because I could litterally do everything on it. I can barely recall my first ride with the Supermodel because nearly everytime I have skated it it has been a damn good ride. I also have never had a wheelbite issue ever with my Supermodel, and I never ran my trucks tighter than a comfortable cruising tightness. The worst trouble I ever had was getting bad footbite by misplacing my foot after a trick or slide.
The ride is amazing. It took me awhile to get used to the deck because it was so much wider than anything I have ridden before, but after a day or two it just grew into me and felt like pure money. The platform is VERY spacious, and the winglike concave just locks your feet in for everything. The nose and tail also helped alot with some tricks and ollieing up stuff. It is also low enough for me to push for miles, and I litterally push miles up and down hills to get to my spots.
This thing does its job well. For freeriding I prefered it over my Hellcat and Demonseed, the only thing that kept up to par with it was the Nemesis. But even still, the Supermodel just exceeded my expectations and blew the rest of my quiver away. The slides felt very butter and my tuck was at home on the platform. The torsional flex isn't noticeable until you're going sideways, and you can feel the difference compared to the Nemesis, it helps.
I've had my fair share of wipeouts on it, and it's bucked me off a few times, but it was just reminding me that the rider is the one who needs improvement. Now the Supermodel is a tank. Hell, if a tank had a bigger brother or sister it would be it. I have pushed my Supermodel to school and back almost daily, it has met curbs head on, it has been shot down stairs, it flew into a pond, it's been to several skateparks, it has even flown across a four lane road after a failed early grab, and it is still intact. Of course it will have its dings and dents, scratches and scuffs, but it still rides like I opened it yesterday.I also thought that since the mounting holes were so much closer to the cutout it would easily shatter. Boy was I wrong.
I ran the Supermodel on Randals and the purple InHeats for the longest time, I tried Bennett Gators, Cult Gamma Rays, S9 Race Formulas, and 86a Durians, and none of them felt as comfortable on the Supermodel than the InHeats. I even threw on some powerballs and strikers a few times, but still, the purple InHeats just belonged on that board. But after awhile I was craving something new: Indys.
Recently, I ordered stock Indys and Cult Classics to put on the deck. And let's just say it was probably one of the best decisions of my life. Completely different feel from Randals, and the Cults were just a step up from the InHeats. I am a pusher, I push everywhere, and the Indys with Classics makes the board so low and easy to push that I don't ever get tired skating to my spots anymore. It slides like ice, even more so than the Durians and purples, and it can hold its speed pretty damn well with 85a Venoms. The new setup is definately more lively than before, and now I know why it is built around Indys.
Now that I think about it, I am sort of glad I never went out with that girl. I would have never skated the Supermodel, and my life would be incomplete. There is such a thing as the best board, for me at least, and that would be the Supermodel. I really couldn't ask for anything more out of it. Out of my 4 years of longboarding, DHing, skateboarding, I think the Supermodel has made more for me in the past 5 months I have been skating it than any other deck I have ever owned. Matter-o-fact I'm nearly done selling all my Raynes
